Information

Formerly a government place and the residence of the Governor of Phatthalung, the Department of Fine Arts renovated the place and opened it to the public.

Phatthakung Governors Residence consists of the Old Residence belonging to the Governor of Phatthalung Phraya Apai Borirak (Noi Chantharotchanawong) for residential and administrative purposes. It is not known, however, in which year the place had been constructed. After the passing-away of Phraya Apai Borirak, the Old Residence was passed on to his son Luang Sri Worachat (Pin Chantharotchanawong) and became heritage of Luang Sri Worachat's daughter Prapai Muttamara. It finally was delivered to the Department of Fine Arts.

The current residence is the combination of traditional southern and central architecture styles, with twin traditional Thai houses in the center. Supported by round-shape columns, the house is located high above the ground and equipped with a big house serving as the porch facing west. Located side-by-side is the area for administrative duties or performing ceremonies. At the end of it is the kitchen house with stairs on two sides: south and north.

The Old Residence is in the form of 3 identical traditional Thai houses. Located next to each other high above the ground, the 1st and the 2nd houses were made into bedrooms while the 3rd one or Mae Tan room covered the areas of the halls in front of the 1st and 2nd houses. A small area separated the little house from the identical houses and came with a big, oval-shaped clay jar for the Governor's bath time with his subordinates fetching water from Lam Pam canal. Opposite the identical houses, there was a wood house serving as rice storehouse, kitchen, storage and toilet. It came with a traditional construction technique called “Look Sak,” meaning the use of wood pieces to hold the structure together instead of nails. After the restoration, the porch was replaced by a clay-tile ground.

The New Residence was commissioned under the command by Pharaya Apai Borirak (Net Chantharotchanawong). Located southwards behind the Old Residence, it earned the name of “Wang Mai Chai Khlong” or “Wang Chai Khlong” (new residence next to the canal) as it was located next to Lam Pam canal. The New Residence consists of 5 traditional Thai houses with the two identical houses serving as Governor Pharaya Apai Borirak and his family's residence as the main quarter. The rest of the traditional houses surround the residence ground, with three of them designed in smaller sizes but with the same structure of bedrooms and front porch for the Governor's lesser wives and children and the other serving as a kitchen. Every house was built with wood following the traditional Thai house style.

Descendants of Chantharotchanawong family delivered the Phatthalung Governors Residence to the Department of Fine Arts for national heritage. The Department then performed a restoration and finally managed to transform the once-crumbling wood house into the stunning southern Thai architecture which has now come the identity of Phatthalung Province. The grand opening of Phatthalung Governors Residence was launched in 1993.
