1-Day Adventure to EGAT Learning Center

The thick smoke billowing from a power plant in the evening near Rama VII Bridge is a common sight for Bangkok residents. Many will undoubtedly think this is the cause of the pollution problem plaguing the city. However, a visit to EGAT Learning Center dispelled that misconception.

Because in reality, the smoke is actually harmless water vapor, not PM2.5 pollution. This realization sparked a sense to learn about energy and electricity generation.

From a spark of curiosity to discovering the light of hope

The exhibition takes you on a journey through 7 zones and 7 pathways. It starts with an adventure in a 4D movie that is sure to thrill and take the children on a dimension-warping experience into the future. It's an unforgettable experience that will leave you breathless.

The next zone is driven by games and technology where we will be transported to how life could be in the future, a place where technology coexists with nature. We can try out the Smart City Smart House building game where we can learn about the conceptualization and production of electricity in the future. We can learn about Piezoelectric technology, which allows us to convert pressure, vibration, or human kinetic energy into electricity through the activity called "Tree of Life".

After that, the exhibition takes you through the different types of power plants in Thailand, including their respective technologies for electricity generation. For instance, the hydroelectric power plant which converts water from the Chao Phraya River into electricity, and the coal-fired power plant that addresses environmental concerns by transforming floating debris into artificial reefs. The exhibition also features global trends in power generation technology aimed at preserving resources and creating a sustainable future.

Learning through lectures not as effective as experiencing it firsthand

In addition to enjoying the exhibitions and learning about the operation of power plants, we can feel the commitment towards a brighter future for energy where it will be eco-friendly and easy to access. The motorcycle taxi riders around the area said that they got to test electric motorcycles from this learning center, along with charging stations for motorcycles and cars that are available for public use.

A quick walk to the rooftop will lead us to a sky garden, which helps with the insulation of the building and saves energy. The garden also features vertical vegetation. Each household can grow these vegetations through the regulation of water, nutrition, sunlight, and temperature. The learning center building utilizes a water circulation system where wastewater is pumped out of the building to be treated and come back to water the plants in a bid to reduce water usage.

Wrap up the tour with a visit to a model energy-efficient home, an energy-saving solution that is aimed at maximizing benefits. Everything from the material used in its construction, to energy-saving home appliances and water circulation systems may make the home quite costly. However, looking a the long-term and bigger picture, it is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. This reduces the overall cost and minimizes pollution in this world.

There are a variety of fun activities and challenges for you to try and play. For example, during the semester break, there are youth camps like the Low Carbon Day Camp, mystery-shadow hunt activities, mini-concerts, and energy-saving activities with Paper Planes, which is a favorite.
