SAWANVORANAYOK NATIONAL MUSEUM
The Sawanvoranayok National Museum was established according to the wishes of Pra Sawanvoranayok, the former abbot of Wat Sawankharam and chief administrator of the Buddhist monkhood in Sukhothai province. Pra Sawanvoranayok was very interested in conserving the Thai cultural heritage, and collected many valuable antiquities. He bequeathed his collection to the nation upon his death, and asked the Fine Arts Department of Thailand to establish a National Museum in the compound of Wat Sawankharam.
In 1981 the Fine Arts Department received the collection, as well as objects from the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum, artifacts from excavations of the Old City of Si Satchanalai, and Sangkhaloy wares from sunken ships in Sattahip Bay near Khram Island in the Gulf of Thailand. Objects donated by the public were also included in exhibits for the new national museum.
