SAC Gallery cordially invites you to the “Crossing the Lines'' group exhibition curated by Kukasina Kubaha, Trithida Trising, and Panod Srinual. The exhibition weaves together stories of marginalized labourers, demarcated by different constructed ‘lines’ by 6 Thai women and queer contemporary artists. The exhibition is on view from 4 June - 16 July 2022, on the 2nd floor, Art Building, SAC Gallery, Bangkok.
As fresh faces to the art circle, the three curators would like to invite viewers to immerse themselves in topics that are still quite silent in the art scene. "Crossing the Lines” takes viewers into the lives of marginalised labourers, threaded together by ‘lines’ that have been imposed upon us by an invisible hegemony. Throughout the exhibition, viewers are asked to transcend the lines of race, geographical borders, gender, and class to arrive at a space where we are all in solidarity.
By bringing together different perspectives —Kukasina as a Southeast Asian scholar-in-training at the Asien-Afrika Institut, University of Hamburg, Trithida with her degree in cultural management from the University of Bologna, and Panod as a gender activist —the trio aim to extrapolate on the topics of gender and class by using new media art works of 6 early-mid career Thai artists as a vessel to cross different ‘lines’.
The reason why labour issues and the push for a welfare state in Thailand has stagnated, undeniably, also comes from the fact that we have been barred from seeing the similarities among us and other groups of labourers. Mainstream media only propagates the image of labourers (mostly men) as those who transact bodily force in exchange for money, but as the spectre of Karl Marx lingers on, we can also speculate that “we are all labourers.” We all exchange physical force, thought, time, to survive in this society, even though some workers’ output may not be recognized as work.
“Start! Art Curator” is a project under SAC Academy which promotes the education of gallery and curatorial practices. The project aims to cultivate space for new curators to come and learn with SAC’s professional team. Apart from curating their own exhibition, the winners would also have opportunities to join exclusive workshops and gallery viewings. This program, therefore, serves as a gateway into the art scene for interested people.
Crossing the Lines exhibition is open for viewing from 4 June - 16 July 2022, every Tuesday-Saturday 10.00-18.00 hrs (Closed on Sundays, Mondays, and public holidays) on the 2nd floor of the Art Building, SAC Gallery Bangkok. The official opening reception is held on 4 June 2022 at 15.00 hrs. Further information can be found at www.sac.gallery, Facebook/sacbangkok and instagram.com/sacbangkok
