The museum was founded in 1985 by Phet Wiriya who persuaded his friends and his students with a great carving skill and passion on the art of Lanna wood carving . The carving group came up in 1988. Mr. Prayoon Chanyawong (1915), the famous columnist of the “ Thairath” newspaper visited and gave  the name of the house that " Ban Chang Nak " which means the house with lot of elephants. Ban Chang Nak has developed the pattern of elephant carvings from the original to look lively and  real elephant-like. It  is considered the first place to have an elephant-like carving. Ban Chang Nak is the first of replacing the original material to be mixing of wood and Cassia instead of teak .The only benefit of the Cassia wood in the past was to make fuel only. Cassia wood is very hard wood and more difficult curving than teak but beautiful and having natural color. There is also the introduction of local wisdom by  bringing the ebony ball to stained wood which gives natural colors and no toxic residues and the environment protection . Ban Chang Nak was moved be  the local museum,  under the private sector in 2003 .   Widely Among tourists, both Thai and foreigner which is interested in this Art . Ban Chang Nak proud to be part of making the people to loves and cherishes and realizes the importance and problems of Thai elephants today and to conserve Thai elephants with Thai people.
