Information
Somdetchaopraya Museum is Thailand’s first psychiatry museum. It was built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn who foresaw that the illness among his people was an urgent matter. He ordered his committee to build a modern hospital and officially opened it on November 1, 1889. Dr. Hathai Chitanon, the Director of Somdet Chaopraya Hospital, realized that the history of Thai psychiatry started here and that this hospital was the true model of psychiatric hospitals. It was worth to gather its history and development of the hospital. Thus, "Somdet Chaopraya Psychiatric Institute" was established to collect antique tools and utensils used in the hospital for later generations to learn from. The exhibition is a permanent one on psychiatry, from the history of Somdet Chaopraya Hospital to stories of those who were in therapy. The storytelling is done by photographs, equipment and tools used by the patients in the past. The exhibition is divided into 4 rooms. Room 1: The Hospital’s History, Room 2: Hall of Fame of the Hospital, Room 3: Exhibition on Psychiatric Patients and the Hospital, Room 4: Somdej Chao Phraya Hospital and the Royal Activities
