Previously under the supervision of Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Waramahavihar Temple, the museum was declared in the Government Gazette by Fine Arts Department as one of National Museums on 14 November 1961. 

Phra Buddha Chinnarat National Museum exhibits archaeological finds and art objects which are considered to be valuable in terms of history, archaeology, tradition and culture, ranging from the past to present days of Phitsanulok and nearby provinces. These artifacts are derived from the contributors as offerings to Buddha. There are also objects unearthed during the restoration of historical sites in Phitsanulok Province, such as Buddha image, terracotta votive tablet of different eras. Additionally, various lines of porcelain were excavated and displayed, i.e. celadon, bone china, ceramic paint, as well as Benjarong, gold-painted porcelain and cut glass. Notably, there are silver and gold blessing trees that King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and members of the royal family had bestowed as offerings to Buddha.
