How the name Trat came from is, however, still no clear conclusion. There are some assumptions that have collected as below.

         From the hearsay of both two persons, comparing with the information of Forestry Association of Thailand, founded that the “Krad” tree has many local names which are; Yang Krad (Chonburi province), Tad (Nakorn Rachasima province) Trai (Khmer, Suay, Surin province) Hiang Krad (Ratchaburi). The useful of this tree consists house construction, Krad oil use to heal lesions and leprosy. Moreover, it can use as a torch, caulk the boat hull, and basketry coating. From this information, it is possible that the name Krad, Tras, or Trat comes from this kind of tree.

         According to the references of Mr.Bantheung Yankoset, there is no document or evidence that surely confirm where the name of Trat town came from, the words “Tras”, “Krad”, “Trat” are continued to be mix using. As evidence in the chronicle recorded that used ‘Trat town” in the event that Prince Tak mobilized this troop from Chantaburi to Trat. “Tras town” evident in sugar tax in the reign of King Rama IV (in 1857), and the used of “Krad town” appeared in the Royal Gazette of visiting cities in the east coast. In French document recorded the story about Trat as Kratt (Krad), assuming that wrote as the Trad old men’s accent speaking that usually call Krad. For this case, Ajarn Montri Kurukijkosol, Director of Bo Rai Wittayakhom, noted that Trad’s old men usually pronounce “T” as ‘K”, such as “Pha Trai” pronounce as ‘Pha Krai”, “Tra Triam” pronounce as “Kra Kiam”, “Trok” pronounce as “Krok”. As the present name of Trat appeared during the time that Phraya Inthara Bodi positioned as Royal Commissioner (Samuha Tesaphiban) in 1927.¹
