Buppha Ram temple

Buppha Ram temple, a site for learning about Thai history

The area inside the temple

Buppha Ram temple, called Plai Klong temple by the locals, is located at Moo 3 Wang Kra Jae Subdistrict, Muang Trat District, about 2 kilometers west of the city center. It has been assumed that this temple is about 300 years old. A very old stupa there houses great number of Buddha’s footprints and Buddha images in various poses. The temple used to be the administrative center for the head of the monks in Trat. It houses Buddha’s relics which are believed to be the authentic ones as legend says that they were brought from an abandoned city in the northern part of Chiang Mai by Captain Phu, an officer who was working at a watchpost of the northern border of Chiang Mai. The relic was found in an earthen jar, which was 1 Kueb thick, 2 Sok (cubit) long, 1 Sok(cubit) wide, 1 sok(cubit) plus 1 Kueb tall and was placed on the middle part of a dilapidated bell-shaped stupa, with many Buddha images, which were heavily rusted that they couldn’t be recognized as buddha images at first. After knocked by the guard of a sword, covering rust disappeared, revealing the Buddha’s relic. Their color and shape matched with the features of Buddha relics in the Buddhist text, which described the Buddha relics were as big as cabbage seeds, broken rice grain and green beans , and the color was like that of a crystal. Captain Phu offered them to Phra Athikarn buddhi, an abbot at Tham Chang Puek temple, Nonthaburi province. The other part was gave to Phra Athikarn Bhudha Suthajarn, an abbot at Tham Tago temple, Nonthaburi province. Later, the monk Atikarnputh-Suthajarn had taken the relics to ____ the monk found other relics with the same color and shape. Therefore, it was assumed that they were assembled together. After that, they were passed to Khun Pathee Anam Pacha, the deputy governer who lived at Pra Chachoduek’s house, west side near Suwarn temple, Bangkok. The relics, then were given to Buppha Ram temple on 19 January 1916, or according to the Thai lunar calendar, Monday, the seventh day of the waxing moon of the fourth lunar month , while Than Ajarn Ho was the temple’s abbot, and later given the title as “Phra Khru Sarn Phisut”, the head of Trat’s monks. 1

Nowadays, Buppha Ram temple keeps the collections of valuable antiques, including the Buddha relics, regarded the most auspicious object of the country, silvered gold Buddha images, Buddha images in various poses, Chinese and European porcelains, as well as bronze drums. The discoveries of these objects demonstrate that there were transportation and the cultural exchange between the port cities on the east coast of Siam and those of Southeast Asia and western countries oversea. The museum in the temple opens at 8am and closes at 5pm every day

Moreover, there are many interesting buildings to see in the temple compound. For example, a row of small Kutis (houses for monks) were built according to one of disciplinary regulations for monks which allowed only one monk to stay in a Kuti. The locals who sent their children to be ordained as monks or to study Dhamma at this temple would build Kutis for their children. Furthermore, there is a wooden prayer pavilion, whose base was raised on stilts. The pavilion’s roof was built with single layer coating roof tiles and its shape resemble a bird’s wing, with a wooden tympanum displaying a gilt pattern of Thep Phanom , or worshipping Guardian Angels. Its wooden walls were tied together with octagonal poles. Also, there is a Chedi with 12 angles which was built from laterite rocks adhered together by cement paste. In the temple compound, the visitors can find Wihan Fa Kradan, or a Sermon Hall with one-layered roof, and wooden walls, which was built in Ayuddhaya Era. Its brick base was adhered by cement and imitated the shape of a Chinese junk ship, like that of a stupa and a sermon hall.
